Session One: Retreat & Alumni Reception Sep 16, 2010(participation is required)

Welcomes you to the Leadership Institute. History, expectations, structure, how you can use what you learn. Get to know each other. Get overview of the Upper Valley. Place-based activities. Your learning goals. Also a wine and cheese reception for participants and alumni.

Session Two: Health and Human Services Oct 14, 2010

Planner: Jennifer Petersson
Builds understanding of community dynamics. Learn about supporting institutions of Health and Human Service. Understand the needs of not-for-profit organizations. Learn how to participate as an engaged citizen on a not-for-profit Board. Presenters, hands-on, and discussion.

Session Three: Education Nov 11, 2010

Planner: Helen Damon Moore
Challenges faced by today’s educators and students. Visit a local school: how has education changed? Adult educational opportunities in the region. How to be engaged.

Session Four: Art Builds Community Dec 9, 2010

Planner: Joanne Wise
Develops first-hand knowledge of how the arts impact our lives in this region. Why arts allows us to attract and retain good employees. Hands-on and practical. What creative connections are in your workplace? How arts and community work better together.

Session Five: Communication Jan 13, 2011

Planner: Doug Wise
How do the local media outlets make key decisions? Media relations. Changes in communications profession. Social media's leadership implications. Presenters, field trips, discussion, hands-on.

Session Six: Economic Development Feb 10, 2011

Planner: Joan Goldstein
How does this region attract and develop business? Growth: what kind is positive, how is it monitored, issues of public opinion. Business and civic leaders introduce you to growth potential and limits in our region. Standard practices and innovative systems. Entrepreneurship.

Session Seven: Government & Politics Mar 10, 2011

Planner: Karen Liot Hill
State, county, and town/city governmental bodies defined. Who decides what? How can you be a more engaged citizen? Overcoming challenges to meaningful involvement. Candid discussions with local and state leaders.

Session Eight: Transportation Apr 14, 2011

Planner: Gabe Zoerheide
Where are all those cars coming from? Deeper issues behind the complex transportation picture. Who uses what kinds of transport? Hands-on, presentation, and group discussion with visiting transit providers and planners. Help your business take better advantage of public transportation options.

Session Nine: Graduation May 12, 2011

Wrapping it all up. How are you already using the exposure you've had to new ideas this year? How have your workplace and your personal life benefited by your participation? What challenges arose in introducing change in your life, and how did you overcome them? How will you be an active Leadership Upper Valley alumnus?
