Lesson 11: Pulling it All Together

Focusing Questions/Themes:
What do we need to have a finished Quest?
  • a complete map (with border & compass rose)
  • polished clues (movement & teaching sequenced)
  • a completed treasure box (book, stamp, pad)
Vermont Standard(s):
Design and Production: 5.15: Students Design and Create media products that successfully communicate.
Understanding Place: 4.6cc: Explore and participate in sustaining or building on unique and valued elements of past and present community heritage.
New Hampshire Standard(s):
Visual Arts Curriculum Standard 1: Apply appropriate media, techniques, and processes; Curriculum Standard 2: Identify and apply the elements of visual art and principles of design.
Length of time needed to complete:
One to two classes. Note: this could also be done as project homework. Depending on how much they have done already, what state your Quest is in, and if this is going to be in-class work or homework, etc., you may wish to give this more or less time.
Materials:
Paper, pencils, glue sticks, computers, a pair of compasses (artist) and various art materials for the box maker, bookmaker and stamp maker.
Procedure:
  1. Show a sample of a finished Quest to the students and encourage discussion about design, layout, graphics, etc.
  2. Tell the students that this is the time for them to pull together and work to bring their Quest to a final product. Set a deadline for the completion of tasks.
  3. The best-designed compass roses reflect the specific quest and can be used as an additional teaching tool.
  4. Finally, assign students/groups to different jobs:
    Job Title:Artist(s)
    Task: Come up with a design for a Compass Rose that indicates North and utilizes elements/details/themes of your Quest site.
    1. Sketch out the Compass Rose.
    2. Ink it with dark pen so that it will photocopy well.
    Materials: paper, pencil, pen, examples of Compass Rose
    Job Title: Poets(s)
    Task: Review "portions" of the Quest and work to improve flow, meter, and rhyme so that the Quest works well as a whole.
    Materials:
    Pen, paper, computer, dictionary, thesaurus
    Job Title: Designer(s)
    Task: Come up with a publication format/design that works best for the Quest. Questions that should be answered: What should the cover look like? Where should the map and clues be placed on the paper? Create a statement from the group. "This Quest was created by.because. we'd like to thank."
    Materials: Paper, pens, colored markers, crayons, copies of map and clues.
    Job Title: Book Maker(s)
    Task: Create sign-in book and replacement sign-in book. Write welcoming entry from your class to the future visitors.
    Materials: cloth, paper, end paper, glue stick, stapler, directions.
    Job Title: Scrap Booker(s)
    Task: Using your treasure box for size, make a picture/resource book that contains more information about your Quest site.
    Materials: digital photos, copies of photos, copies of old maps, copies of student drawings, copies of primary or secondary resources: articles, newspaper articles, etc.
    Job Title: Stamp Carver(s)
    Task: Carve stamp for Valley Quest Treasure Box.
    1. Go over directions.
    2. Make practice stamp to become familiar with materials/process.
    3. Come up with design for stamp that reflects the Quest's theme.
    4. Work to carve final stamp.
    Materials: Paper, pen, rubber block, carving tool.
    Job Title: Thank You Committee
    Task:Write Thank you letters to the people who helped you complete this project. Materials: Pen/paper or computer.
