Lesson 3: Where did the soldiers live? Using 19th century maps

- Geographical Knowledge 6.7: Students use geographical knowledge and images of various places to understand the present, communicate historical interpretations, develop solutions for problems, and plan for the future.
- New Hampshire Standard(s):
- Curriculum Standard 10: Students will demonstrate the ability to use maps, mental maps, globes, and other graphic tools and technologies to acquire, process, report, and analyze geographic information.
- Curriculum Standard 15.3: Use maps and narratives to place history and contemporary events in spatial context.
- Materials:
- 11 x 17 map, pencil, highlighter
- Procedure:
- On a chalkboard or easel, generate a list of the Civil War veterans found: Names, birth/death dates, regiments, companies, etc. (You might follow up and create an Excel spreadsheet as a "technology lesson" extension.)
- Have students search for these names on the map utilized in Lesson 2.
- Students highlight the homes with a colored pencil or highlighter.
- Discuss findings: questions, comments, connections.
