Civil War Quest

Maps As Sources

Students can investigate the history of both their soldiers and their towns by looking at old maps of the area. Maps can reveal not only where their soldiers lived, but also more general information about the businesses in the town at the time, as well as the way that property was divided between families. One exciting exercise for students is to transpose the historic map of their soldiers' time onto a current map of the area. Students compared past and present maps with Arc View. For more information take a look at: Where did the soldiers live? Using 19th century maps.

Maps can also include other informative directories
