Letters as Primary Sources

Here, students read a letter in the graveyard on their visit to the cemetery.
The letter was found in the book, A War of The People, and can be viewed below. It was one of many letters of correspondence from the Civil War.
This letter is a transcribed version; students can find original letters in local historical societies and state or university libraries. Included in this letter are warnings from a worried brother at home, requesting that his brother at war not be taken by the temptations of drinking and gambling, something picked up on and included in their verse of this quest.
